A contract laborer was killed in the Qiziltepa district of the Navoiy province after a trench collapsed during underground pipe repairs, the spokesman to the Prosecutor General’s Office Hayot Shamsutdinov said.

The incident occurred on August 7 in the Alisher Navoiy neighborhood, where the 59-year-old worker, identified as S.Q., was repairing aging subterranean pipes. He was buried alive by collapsing soil and died at the scene.

Authorities noted that the victim was an independent employee. He is survived by his wife and four children - three daughters and a son. The Qiziltepa District Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragedy comes amid broader concerns over industrial safety. According to Labor Inspectorate’s figures, 447 workplace accidents occurred across the country in the first half of 2026 alone, with 113 resulting in fatalities.
