1,280 traffic accidents were officially recorded in Tashkent in 2024, with 1,189 people injured and 91 killed. These figures are contained in the decision of the Tashkent city deputies council dated February 10.
Most of the accidents - 720 - occurred involving pedestrians. In 98 cases, the cause of accidents was speeding.
These statistics "point to the need to seriously focus on this matter," the document emphasizes.
The Council deputies set a number of goals for the Road safety department of the Tashkent police department.
The Department must also conduct a thorough analysis of traffic and pedestrian flows, accidents involving pedestrians, accident sites, and develop measures to sharply reduce fatalities on streets.
The Council instructed the Traffic Police Department to make substantiated proposals to contribute funding from additional funds in the city budget for the following activities:
- purchase of 10 mobile photo radars to control traffic speed;
- organization of 12 raised crossings on streets and roads during the year in order to prevent accidents involving children;
- installation of metal fences based on an analysis of accidents involving pedestrians crossing streets in places not intended for this purpose.
Additionally, the possibility of organizing business travels to Warsaw, Copenhagen and Amsterdam to study advanced foreign experience in ensuring traffic safety and its implementation in Tashkent will be studied.
In addition, it is planned to conduct scientific and practical research with the involvement of think tanks and the Department of Digital Development of the Tashknet mayor’s office to study problems related to road safety and factors contributing to accidents, as well as sociological surveys among road users.
