President Mirziyoyev ordered to purchase 1,000 buses for the Tashkent public transport in 2025, the Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Makhkamov told the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel on Saturday.
In October 2023, the Tashkent city mayor’s office signed a purchase agreement with BYD for 2,000 K9UD eBus electric buses.
In addition, according to the minister, 675 infokiosks will be installed at bus stops before the year-end for the purchase of one-time tickets with QR code, after cash-payments on public transport were scrapped as of Jan. 1.
"In general, a draft resolution for the Tashkent public transport development and a new program will be drafted by February 1," added Ilkhom Makhkamov.
After the abolition of cash payments in buses, the daily recorded passenger flow on buses increased by 43.5% - from 871 thousand to 1.19 million people from January 1 to 10, while revenues also rose by 36% - from 8.5 to 11.5 billion soums.
By the end of 2024, Tashkent’s bus fleet rose to 1901, which is 28% more than in 2022 (1485), while reportedly, wait times at bus stops have been halved over the past two years - from 22 to 10-12 minutes.
