In his remarsk on Friday at the Samarkand Climate Forum, the President Mirziyoyev emphasized that last year the average global temperature increase had reached one and a half degrees Celsius, and the last decade had been the hottest in the history of meteorological observations.
“The Central Asian countries have developed and unanimously approved the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy."
“Cooperation with the European Union also continues within the framework of programs to mitigate the effects of the drying up of the Aral Sea, rational water use and expanding the share of renewables.”
"Undoubtedly, today the European Union is a global leader in protecting and promoting the climate change agenda. We are ready to further deepen practical cooperation in this area".
“The problems of climate change are inextricably linked with food and energy security.”
"Fertile lands are rapidly shrinking in surface, while the region's population may exceed 100 million people in 25 years. Today, more than 20% of the region's total land area is subject to degradation. In a quarter of a century, crop yields may decrease by a third."
"In this regard, I consider it vitally important to combine our scientific potential to increase the adaptability of forestry and the agricultural sector, as well as to strengthen food security within the framework of the Horizon Europe program".
“Uzbekistan is carrying out greening within the framework of the Yashil Makon (Green Space) project to reduce the area of degraded lands and mitigate the effects of climate change. In addition, drought-resistant plants have been planted on more than 2 million hectares of desert areas in the Aral Sea region.”
“I propose holding a regional tree-planting campaign called "Green Belt of Central Asia" every year on the eve of Navruz.”
“Uzbekistan has begun the transition to a resource-saving and environmentally friendly model of economic development.”
“One of the key areas is "green" energy. We plan to increase the share of energy obtained from renewable sources to 54% in the next five years. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 16 million tons".
“Uzbekistan will make every effort to fulfill its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% under the Paris Agreement ahead of schedule.”
“I suggest creating a Secretariat for the EU Water-Energy-Climate Change initiative in Tashkent to mobilize funding, technology and expertise.”
“According to forecasts, by 2040, against the backdrop of a reduction in the flow of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, the countries of Central Asia will face a high level of water stress.”
"In order to save water resources, we are concreting irrigation networks, created an industrial base for the production of water-saving technologies, which have already been implemented on almost half of our irrigated lands (almost 2 million hectares). Thanks to such measures, last year we managed to save about 8 billion cubic meters of water," the president said.
“I urged for concerted efforts and launching a Regional Program for the Implementation of Water-Saving Technologies in Central Asia. Uzbekistan plans to hold an international forum in the Aral Sea region for expert discussion of these plans.
“Uzbekistan also counts on close cooperation with the EU within the framework of the Copernicus Program for continuous satellite observations of the state of glaciers and early diagnosis of risks to mountain ecosystems in the region.”
“The Climate Residence, created on the basis of Green University in Tashkent, can act as a common scientific and expert platform for the study and monitoring of climate processes in Central Asia”.
“Sustainable, secure and prosperous world, it is necessary to strengthen dialogue and coordinate the efforts of all states”. the President of Uzbekistan concluded.
