Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are exploring the possibility of recognizing ID cards as an international document for crossing borders. This matter was addressed during an online meeting between officials of the Uzbek Interior Ministry and the State Migration Service of Azerbaijan, with participation from consular and legal departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The new procedure is expected to simplify travel for citizens, boost bilateral ties, and enhance cooperation in migration policy. The use of biometric ID cards will enable citizens of the two countries to cross the border without an international passport, significantly improving travel convenience.
This step is anticipated to foster stronger trade, economic, cultural, and tourism ties between the two nations.
Since September 1, 2024 Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals can freely visit the two countries with an ID card (instead of international passports). Steps are being taken on the introduction of a similar procedure with Kazakhstan and Tajikistan in near future.
