President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended the first session of the Legislative Chamber after the elections on Monday.
“We are one force, and one nation. We must all try and not be indifferent to the future of our nation and Motherland. You are all patriots, each of you is occupying a seat in the parliament. The people's representatives sitting here must be ready to serve from the heart,” he said at the end of the session (according to a story by the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel).
“We have launched very large reforms. Our people trust and believe in these reforms. Their continuity depends on you and me. I will be grateful if the new parliament of the New Uzbekistan — the Legislative Chamber — creates and implements an effective control system,” the head of state said.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev once again reiterated that “there must be debates and opposition” in parliament.
“Pro-people laws will emerge through this competition. In a competitive environment, people's concerns will be reflected on paper and implemented in practice... Today is a historic day. Those who spoke today noted that this is a different Uzbekistan, a different people. I ask you to deeply understand this. Our people have elected you with hope. Let us live up to the voice of our people, value our people. This great nation has expressed its trust in us, let us justify this trust," the president noted.
Earlier, the head of state said that in the new era, the parliament of Uzbekistan should become a real people's home, and its lower house should be a generator of ideas, an arena for healthy competition and debate. He noted the need to activate the opposition in parliament and proposed expanding its rights.
