Last week, during a visit to the Navoi province, president Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed to study the possibility of resuming operations of the Zarafshan airport, his spokesman Sherzod Asadov said.
This matter was discussed at a government meeting on the development of the province. Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted that a total of 200 thousand people live in the cities of Zarafshan, Uchkuduk and Tamdy district. To get to Tashkent, locals first travel 250-300 km by car to Navoi, and then go to the capital by train or plane.
The airport in Zarafshan was erected in the 80s, and is currently not functioning. Based on the finding of the study of the possibility of its launch, proposals will be presented to the president.
The meeting also said that in the next 2-3 years the population of Zarafshan will be at over 100 thousand people. In this regard, the president pointed to the need to expand the territory of Zarafshan by 2000 hectares at the expense of the Tamdy district and provide amenities for a 150 thousand population.
