On 16–18 January, within the ADB-financed "Designing and Implementing Gender Components of the Uzbekistan: Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Corridor 2 (Bukhara–Miskin–Urgench–Khiva) Railway Electrification” Project the Training of Trainers took place at the Tashkent State Transport University (TSTU) for 14 teachers of the Faculty of Computer & Electrical Engineering. Further, they will be teaching based on the newly introduced module across their separate degree programs.
The module content was formulated to address the Transport University needs for engineering education, include project-based learning and gain necessary knowledge to evaluate the gender, societal and environmental impacts of engineering solutions, as well as minimize their adverse impacts in line with best international practices.
Following the approval by TSTU of this module for students in the Faculty of Computer and Electrical Engineering in academic year 2022/23, ADB experts conducted a training program (ToT) to support the delivery of the module content by faculty.
During the 3-day ToT participants learned about the gender assessment of engineering solutions, impact of engineering on climate change and obtained new skills required to ensure inclusive and participative engagement of students through a project-based learning approach.
Noteworthily, the new teaching module was specifically designed to allow female students gaining practical, real-world experience and hence aiding their recruitment into the Uzbekistan Railway Company (UTY), as well as promote more collaborative, inclusive approach to engineering education that is more supportive to female students. It highlights a gender perspective of managing staff and the need for gender awareness and addressing gender discrimination in the workplace.
