Tashkent’s city transport department said construction of dedicated bus lanes is causing congestion and delaying buses, after complaints of longer waits and disrupted service intervals.
Dedicated public transport lanes (BRT) totaling 5.09 km are being built and renovated on Shahrisabz Street, Amir Temur Avenue and Yangi Sergeli Street, the department said. Work is under way on 1 km of Shahrisabz Street, 2.73 km of Amir Temur Avenue and 1.36 km of Yangi Sergeli Street.
Temporary traffic restrictions on some road sections have worsened congestion, particularly during morning and evening rush hours, the department said. Buses are running behind schedule, gaps between them have lengthened on some routes, and passengers are waiting longer at stops.
“Once the construction and installation work is completed and normal traffic is restored, congestion will ease and bus intervals will stabilize in line with the schedule,” the city main department for transport and road-transport infrastructure development said in a statement.
The statement did not say when the work will be completed.
Separately, authorities are weighing extending evening service on 20 routes until 23:00. Tashshahartranshizmat JSC and the city transport department have been told to consider, by Dec. 1, running buses between 21:00 and 23:00 on routes linking railway and bus stations, the airport, metro stations and densely populated areas, within existing capacity.
