Uzbekfilm studio has fully settled its tax debt of more than 1 billion soms, according to Jahongir Ahmedov, first deputy minister of culture and director of the Cinematography Agency.

Twelve vehicles that had been slated for auction have also been returned to the studio, Ahmedov said. Uzbekfilm is now working to clear more than 3 billion soms in accumulated wage arrears owed to its employees.

According to Ahmedov, the studio's biggest remaining challenge is a €22 million loan obligation. "We are working with the Ministry of Economy and Finance to release the studio — along with its 10-hectare plot of land — from collateral and resolve the loan issue," he said.

Uzbekfilm had previously acknowledged that it cannot sustain itself without at least 60 billion soms worth of orders per year, a dependency that in practice ties its survival to state commissions.
