The Samarkand international airport will be closed from October 20 to November 20 due to the preparations for the opening of a new airfield complex, the Uzbekistan Airports said.
The flights will be diverted to the Navoi, Bukhara and Karshi airports, from where a ground transfer will be launched for passengers to Samarkand.
According to the company, to date, the construction of a new 3105-meter to 60-meter runway had been fully completed. Within a month, work is to be carried out to connect the taxiways with the runway and the apron.
The construction of a new airfield complex in Samarkand is being carried out in preparation for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, which will be held in 2022.
In September, Uzbekistan Airports and Air Marakanda signed a public-private partnership agreement as part of the Samarkand airport modernization and management project.
