Uzbekistan has adopted the Water Code, the press service of the Ministry of Justice said. The Code regulates the relations in the field of rational use and protection of water, water objects, water management facilities and lands in the water fund.
According to the Code, water is a national treasure, is subject to rational use and shall be protected by the state. Water use is divided into general and special categories.
The following shall be deemed as water objects:
- surface and underground water objects;
- transboundary surface and underground water bodies located on the territory of Uzbekistan and crossing its territory.
Water objects can be in sole or joint use. To make decisions in the field of water resources management, water councils shall be set up in the form of a collegial advisory body at the level of republics and basins, and, if necessary, provinces.
In addition, a Republican Water Council will be created under the Cabinet of Ministers. The law will take effect 3 months after its official publication.
