The Ministry of Energy, together with the World Bank, has begun drafting Uzbekistan’s Electric Grid Code, the Ministry of Energy said in a statement.

The Code will reportedly allow to systematize and specify the functions, rights and obligations of energy companies and consumers, the report said.

Expert advisers from Serbia and the United Kingdom were involved, with the draft expected to be presented to the government by the end of May.

In addition, a new version of the Energy Law on is being developed jointly with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with experts from the UK, Georgia, Austria, Bulgaria and Italy, as well as local experts involved in the process. The draft bill will also be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers at the end of May.

From 2023, Uzbekistan will transition to a competitive electricity market. Now the Ministry of Energy, together with consultants from Georgia, the USA and Turkey, provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the WB, are studying promising models and ways to transition to market relations.

The concept of a electricity market model and the transition to market relations is expected to be submitted to the government by the end of March.
