Construction work on a dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane is set to begin on Shahrisabz Street in central Tashkent, extending the existing line from Shota Rustaveli Street.
The capital’s Traffic Management Center announced that roadworks to adapt the street for the BRT lane will start on July 24. The project covers the section stretching from the Mirabad Street intersection to the Amir Temur Avenue intersection.
While work takes place across the four central lanes, the two outermost lanes will remain open to traffic. The project is expected to continue through the first week of August.
The Tashkent City mayor’s office initially presented the BRT extension plan in April. Following the completion of Shahrisabz Street, the line is scheduled to expand along Amir Temur Avenue. Future plans also include a similar lane on Yangi Sergeli Street, which extends from the opposite end of Shota Rustaveli Street.
According to the Traffic Management Center, the ultimate goal of the project is to "make public transportation faster and more convenient than private vehicles."
Projections show that the average bus speed along the entire BRT corridor is expected to increase by more than 25 percent—rising from 19 to 24 km/h—shaving an average of 15 minutes off commute times for passengers.
