A police officer has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing a road accident in a service car in Termez, Surkhondaryo province, that killed a 10-year-old boy.
The Termez city criminal court found the officer, identified as K.A., guilty under Article 266, Part 2 of the Criminal Code, which covers violations of traffic safety rules. He was also banned from driving all types of vehicles for three years.
The crash occurred at about 11:20 a.m. on April 5, 2026. K.A. drove a Nexia-2 service car from a secondary street onto a main road without stopping at a stop sign and hit the left side of a Cobalt. The Cobalt veered toward a pedestrian crossing and struck the boy, who died at the scene.
K.A. pleaded guilty but said the brakes failed. “I braked when I was 7-8 metres from the sign, but the car did not stop,” he testified.
A forensic examination by the Republican Forensic Examination Center’s Surkhondaryo provincial branch did not support the claim. Experts found the Nexia-2’s steering and service brakes were in working order before the crash. They said the impact broke a part that severed a brake-fluid pipe, so the fault arose during the collision. They also found the Cobalt driver could not have avoided it.
The boy’s father told the court he had no complaint against the Cobalt driver and asked for the harshest penalty allowed by law.
Earlier, a driver in Namangan who caused an accident while carrying 12 children in a Damas was reported to have been jailed for two years.
