The Kyrgyz government plans to implement a number of transport projects in the coming years. This is envisaged by the National Development Program 2030, which includes items on railway line and transport infrastructure modernization projects.

The Program emphasizes the importance of transport and logistics integration and route diversification for the country, given its status as a mountainous landlocked country.

Limited infrastructure, a lack of logistics centers and weak international integration hinder trade potential and the competitiveness of the economy.

The high level of wear of internal roads, bridges and railways leads to increased costs for internal transportation, lower speed of cargo flows and an increase in accidents. According to the government, the contribution of the transport sector to the country's economy stands at about $ 0.5 billion.

One of the projects planned for implementation is the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project, which should significantly expand the country's transit capabilities and improve trade ties in the region.

In addition, the Batken region development plan includes the Batken-Kokand railway project which, according to the authorities, will create new jobs and improve transport connectivity and trade. The modernization of the Batken and Razzakov airports is also on the table.

The initiatives for the development of the Jalal-Abad region include the construction of an alternative Chatkal to Tashkent highway, the Jalal-Abad international airport project, industrial zones, and the Chatkal Resort ski resort project.

In June 2024, the governments of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan discussed the Talas-Chatkal-Tashkent highway project, with a Road Map is being developed for this project. The project will make it possible to increase the two-way trade and boost the tourism sectors of the two countries.

In addition to the road, the parties also considered the construction of a cascade of hydroelectric power plants in the lower floodplain of the Chatkal River, as well as a ski resort of the same name in the areas between Chapchyma and Besh-Salaa.

In February, the Kyrgyz President’s Envoy in the Jalal-Abad Region, Tilek Tekebayev, noted that a new 60-kilometer road could connect Chatkal and Tashkent.
