Prosecutors are conducting a preliminary inquiry into the death of a young woman born in 2005 who died in Kashkadarya province after surgery to remove a pituitary tumor, the provincial health department said.

Reports of her death spread on social media, prompting the department to issue a statement. Further information will be provided once the inquiry’s results are known, it said.

The patient, identified only as L.M., was admitted on Oct. 14 to the neurosurgery unit of the Kashkadarya provincial multidisciplinary hospital with a diagnosis of pituitary adenoma, the department said. She had suffered for several years from difficulty breathing, stunted growth and thickening of the fingers and toes.

Tests found a large tumor in her pituitary gland, and hormonal analyses showed her growth hormone level was significantly above normal. A specialist from the capital took part in an operation on Oct. 16 to remove the tumor endoscopically through the nose.

She remained under doctors’ supervision afterward, and a check on Oct. 19 found no complications, the department said. On Oct. 20, her condition deteriorated sharply, with high blood pressure, loss of consciousness and impaired breathing and heart function.

She died on Oct. 26 despite intensive treatment, it said.

It was reported earlier that a 20-year-old woman struck by an Onix car in Tashkent had died in hospital.
