An atmospheric inversion in Tashkent could last another 10 days, worsening air pollution, Uzhydromet warned. “Dust and pollutants are continuously being released into the air,” the agency said in a statement. “If there is no wind, it is harder for them to disperse.” It said rain also washes dust particles out of the air, and that in the absence of both wind and rain pollutants keep accumulating. An inversion makes it even harder for them to rise and disperse, it said.

Authorities are taking a number of measures to improve air quality, the statement said. These include spraying water on the city’s roads, installing filters at greenhouses, landscaping work and controlling dust at construction sites.

Raids are also being carried out on “greenhouses and industrial enterprises polluting the environment,” it said.
