Shavkat Mirziyoyev familiarized himself with the report on the development of Uzbekistan’s nuclear energy Thursday, the presidential press service said.
Over the past five years, due to the completion of a number of large energy projects, electricity production in Uzbekistan has reached 81.5 billion kWh rising by 30%. To meet growing demand, renewables are also being developed - their share in total generation has reached 16%, last year 3.2 GW of additional capacities were commissioned.
According to estimates, power consumption in the country will top 121 billion kWh by 2035. By 2030, it is planned to increase the share of green energy in the total energy balance to 54%. while, nuclear energy is considered one of the basic sources in the long term.
Currently, the small scale nuclear power plant project is being advanced. Meetings of working groups were held to discuss the project phases and preparing a "road map". A joint action plan for 2025-2027 was also developed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Each phase of the project - from design to completion - will be under strict control of the IAEA, taking into account the best world practices and safety requirements, according to a statement from the presidential press service.
