Starting with the 2026/2027 academic year, morning classes at higher education institutions in Tashkent will begin at 8:00 a.m., the press service of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation announced.
The ministry said the decision was made to ease traffic congestion in the capital and streamline the academic schedule.
The move comes just days after Tashkent's city administration announced a survey gauging public opinion on shifting city and district government offices, departments, and subordinate agencies to an 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. workday.
This is not the first time class schedules have been adjusted to manage congestion. In January 2023, authorities changed start times at 31 universities located near metro stations — five began classes at 8:00 a.m., one at 8:30 a.m., and the rest at 9:30 a.m. At the time, officials said the goal was to ease overcrowding on the city's metro lines.
