The deputy mayor of Chirchik city in Tashkent province has been arrested on suspicion of corruption, the press service of the State Security Service said today. The operation was conducted by the service jointly with the Anti-Corruption Department under the Prosecutor General's Office.
Reportedly, using his official position, he demanded $2 million for assistance in obtaining 20 hectares of land from the mayor’s office reserve land at an auction for the right to use for 49 years with the condition of investing $40 million and creating a shopping mall in the form of a cluster.
The deputy mayor was arrested when he received $1 million upfront through his driver.
