On December 20, the Director of the OSCE/ODIHR, Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir arrived in Uzbekistan to observe the upcoming parliamentary and municipal elections on December 22.

“The very participation of the ODIHR Director to directly observe the parliamentary elections is the recognition by the OSCE of the democratic reforms in Uzbekistan and testifies of the OSCE’s willingness to contribute to further democratic transformations in the country,” the Central Electoral Committee of Uzbekistan noted.

In 2018, ODIHR Director Ingibjörg Gísladóttir visited Uzbekistan to attend the first Asian Human Rights Forum. A memorandum of understanding between the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan and the OSCE/ODIHR was signed on the sidelines of the forum, which aimed at developing mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of improving the Uzbek legislation in accordance with international standards and best practices.
