Uzbekistan has come to an agreement with the countries of Central Asia on water quotas for the 2019 season through Syrdarya and Amudarya river basins, the Uzbek Ministry of Water Management said.
Irrigation intake quotas and the operation mode of reservoir cascades have been approved following the negotiations of the 76th meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (ICWC) in Tashkent on April 19.
In the meeting were present the Minister of Water Management of Uzbekistan Shavkat Khamrayev, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Kazakhstan Yerlan Nisanbayev, the First Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan Sulton Rahimzoda and the head of the water use department of the State Committee for Water Management of Turkmenistan Baygeldi Baizhonov.
The parties also considered participation in the development of an action program to assist the countries of the Aral Sea basin.
The ICWC was established in February 1992. The commission’s tasks are to manage water resources and maintain the sustainability of natural processes in transboundary waters.
