The UN Secretary-General-elect António Guterres sent a message to the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, in which he expressed hope for deepening the close cooperation between the organization and the republic "for the welbeing of the Uzbek people and the Central Asian region as a whole", the message said.

"The United Nations and Uzbekistan has a long history of cooperation, which I intend to strengthen, including through the United Nations Office in Your country and the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia", - the message added.

"I am well aware that the mitigation of the shrinking Aral Sea is our common priority. The UN will continue to support Your efforts to address the problems related  to this tragedy", - the message underscored.

António Guterres thanked Shavkat Mirziyoyev for the invitation to visit Uzbekistan. "I hope to pay a visit to Your country at the earliest opportunity", - he wrote.

Congratulating Shavkat Mirziyoyev on being elected as President, the new head of the UN said that he looks forward to meeting the President and work together "for the sake of the common goal - to find sustainable solutions to today's pressing global and regional challenges."
