In Uzbekistan punishment for motor vehicles (MV) theft will be toughened from 27 December. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Dec 26 signed amendment to the Criminal Code. Amendment Law was passed by the Legislative Chamber on 6 October and was approved by the Senate on October 12.

According to the amended article 267, motor vehicles theft incurs imprisonment from 5 to 10 years (in previous edition - supervised release or imprisonment from 3 to 5 years).

The same crime committed a) again or by a dangerous recidivist, b) in collusion by a group of people, c) with violence or threat of violence, or d) for the purpose of motor vehicle theft by robbery shall be punished with imprisonment from 10 to 15 years (previously for the first two clauses it was punishable with imprisonment from 5 to 10 years).

The same act committed by a) a dangerous recidivist, b) by an organized group, or c) for the purpose of motor vehicle theft by robbery is punishable with imprisonment from 15 to 20 years (previously for the first two clauses it was punishable for imprisonment from 10 to 15 years).

Earlier it was reported that over the past three years the number of cases of motor vehicles theft in Uzbekistan increased by 65%. Amendments to the Criminal Code were initiated by the General Prosecutor's Office.
