Silk Visa for Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan could be launched in February 2019, First Deputy Chairman of the State Tourism Committee Ulugbek Kasimhodzhaev said at a press conference on Thursday.

He added that the Silk Visa project had passed all approvals in the relevant authorities of the two countries, with “only technical details plus the equipment approval” pending.

Ulugbek Kasymkhodjaev noted that Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are interested in the common visa, while Turkmenistan is still considering the possibility.

He added that Kazakhstan is proposing to attract Azerbaijan and Turkey to this project.

The proposal to create “Central Asian Schengen” between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan has been brought up by the chairperson of Kazakhstan’s Senate Committee for International Relations, Defense and Security, Dariga Nazarbayeva.

The mutual visa recognition deal between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan was signed in mid-November.
