Uzbekistan officially launched a new project “Sustainable natural resource and forest management in key mountainous areas important for globally significant biodiversity”.

State Committee on Ecology and the Environment and the UN Development Program (UNDP) in Uzbekistan is implementing the project on the basis of grant of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Project activities will be concentrated in the high mountains of the Western Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai in the administrative boundaries of Tashkent, Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan. A key representative of high mountain ecosystems is the snow leopard.

The project will be implemented in 2017-2022. The total budget of the project is US$6.5 million. The funds are provided by the GEF and UNDP.

The project aims to assist in the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the biodiversity-rich high mountain ecosystems of Uzbekistan.
