On October 10, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a law ratifying the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

The document was adopted by the UN General Assembly resolution on December 19, 1966 and signed in London, Moscow and Washington on January 27, 1967. To date, 114 countries have joined it, with Uzbekistan becoming the 115th participant.

The Legislative Chamber passed the law on July 2, and the Senate approved it on August 15. During the discussion of the bill in the lower house of parliament, Director General of the Uzbekcosmos Agency Shukhrat Kadirov underscored that ratification of the agreement opens up opportunities for Uzbekistan to participate in international space projects and research, as well as to exchange resources and knowledge with other countries. Ratification will also help develop the space legal system of Uzbekistan.

“Space holds an important place in the process of globalization and informatization of the world community. “All developed and many developing countries of the world conduct scientific research on the study and use of outer space, and space potential is used to realize economic, defense, technical, scientific, social, cultural and international interests,” discussions in the Senate said.
