The United Nations Development Programme and the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation on human rights.
NCHR announced that the MoU foresees cooperation in such areas as exchange of information and materials related to promotion and protection of human rights, consultation and assistance in development and implementation of programs in this area, collaboration in developing and publication of related literature, holding national and international events and trainings and participation of Uzbek specialists in the training programs of the UN’s human rights institutions.
The memorandum was signed in the framework of the international conference entitled "National human rights and freedoms protection system in Uzbekistan: achievements during the years of independence", held on 20-21 October in Tashkent.
The forum brought together a representative list of participants, including experts of the Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the OIC Independent Permanent Commission, the Office of OSCE for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Venice Commission of the Council of Europe, political analysts and lawyers from the UK, Germany, Ombudsmen from Indonesiam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Russia and Tajikistan.
Uzbekistan has ratified 10 major international UN human rights treaties. During the years of independence, the country has presented over 35 national reports and 2 universal periodic reviews on human rights situation to the UN statutory and treaty bodies.
