Uzbekhydroenergo and China Southern Power Grid International signed an agreement on the joint construction of the Yuqori Pskem pumped storage power plant (PSPP), the press service of Uzbekhydroenergo said.

The signing took place within the framework of the third international forum “One Belt, One Road”, which is taking place these days in China.

The $1 billion 600 MW Yuqori Pskem pumped storage power plant will be located in Bostanlyk district of Tashkent province.

It should be noted that in July, Uzbekhydroenergo and China Southern Power Grid International signed a memorandum on the construction of three hydroelectric power plants in Uzbekistan with total capacity of 820 MW:

  • Yuqori Pskem PSPP (200 MW);
  • Karateren PSPP (500 MW);
  • Yuqori Pskem hydroelectric power station (120 MW).

The total cost was estimated at that time to be $1.64 billion. It was planned to bring these projects to full capacity by 2030.

A pumped storage power plant produces energy, like a conventional hydroelectric power station, by falling water from the upper basin to the lower one. At the same time, the pumped storage power plant pumps already “spent” water from the lower basin to the upper one, after which the cycle is repeated.
