Deputy Minister of Mining and Geology Azam Kadirkhojaev today at the Innoprom. Central Asia exhibition announced that Uzbekistan intended to start the development of lithium.

“We are preparing to start mining and processing this metal in Uzbekistan’s large lithium deposit,” he announced.

He noted that the ministry considered the development of so-called "technological metals" in Uzbekistan as a promising area.

A little less than a year ago, the President was briefed about plans to create a project office - Yangi Kon (New Mine) under the Uzbekistan Fund for Reconstruction and Development with capital of $15 million. The office will be engaged in the implementation of investment projects for production of graphite, lithium, aluminum, magnesium and other rare metals.

It should be noted that the portfolio of Uzbekistan’s investment proposals includes the development of the Shavazsay lithium deposit in Tashkent province. Its reserves surpass 123 thousand tons. The project cost is estimated at $59.5 million.
