Uzbekistan’s Central Bank bought 8 tonnes of gold in August, bringing its purchases to 50 tonnes in January-August, the World Gold Council said.

Gold now accounts for 90% of Uzbekistan’s foreign exchange reserves, or roughly 439 tonnes, the council’s analysis said.

China was the world’s biggest buyer in August, adding 20 tonnes and bringing its official holdings to nearly 2,387 tonnes. Poland’s central bank bought 8 tonnes in the month and 98 tonnes since the start of 2026. Kazakhstan’s National Bank bought 7 tonnes in August and 36 tonnes since January, lifting its reserves to 377 tonnes.

As of Oct. 1, 2026, Uzbekistan held 14.3 million ounces (444.8 tonnes) of gold, up from 12.6 million ounces (391.9 tonnes) in early January, an increase of about 52.3 tonnes over nine months. The World Gold Council has not yet published September figures.

Background: Uzbekistan’s reserves have risen as the country has cut gold exports. The Navoi and Almalyk mining and metallurgical combines are the two major gold producers. The Central Bank is their only buyer and can sell the metal when needed.
