Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have agreed to exempt nationals of both countries from mandatory registration for up to 15 days after crossing the border. Omonulla Fayziev, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan shared the update.
According to Fayziev, the corresponding protocol was signed on July 30 following bilateral talks between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President Sadyr Japarov. The new document serves as an amendment to the 2006 agreement on reciprocal national travel.
"The protocol aims to further liberalize the travel regime between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic by simplifying residency rules in the host country," the MFA spokesperson stated.
The document waives the requirement for Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals to obtain permanent or temporary registration with the host nation's competent authorities for the first 15 days after crossing the state border.
Fayziev emphasized that this protocol marks the next phase in a broader initiative to establish favorable conditions for the free movement of people, while boosting cross-border cooperation, tourism, trade, and humanitarian ties between the two nations.
Under current Kyrgyz law, Uzbek nationals are required to register in person with local law enforcement agencies within five working days of entry.
The updated rules will take effect once both nations finalize their respective domestic ratification processes.
Earlier on July 30, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov announced that the new agreements would completely resolve lingering border disputes and double the number of operational border checkpoints from 15 to 30.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev hailed the ongoing construction of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway as the "construction project of the century," asserting that it will "fundamentally reshape regional geopolitics." He added that Uzbekistan is deeply invested in a strong Kyrgyzstan and will continue to support its neighbor’s domestic reforms.
Following the high-level talks, the two leaders signed a Treaty on Alliance Relations between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The sides also discussed expanding cooperation in energy, trade, and logistics.
