On Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry held its regular monthly meeting with the Russian authorities on migration issues. According to the Foreign Ministry’s press service, the Uzbek officials "pointed at the reports of unauthorized checks, disrespectful and rude treatment of Uzbek nationals in a number of cases in Russia that are cause for serious concern."

The day before, in Moscow, riot police officers conducted a "tough" raid on a dormitory where labor migrants lived at one of the Defense Ministry facilities in the Strogino district. According to eyewitnesses, law enforcement officers treated them rudely: they kicked men out of their rooms, and those who hesitated were driven forward with kicks and slaps. Insults addressed to migrants can also be heard on the video recording.

We drew attention to the fact that such cases are absolutely incompatible with the friendly relations between our countries and that concrete measures are required to prevent them.

"The Republic of Uzbekistan considers the protection of the rights of its nationals living and temporarily staying abroad as its priority task," the Foreign Ministry emphasized.

The Embassy of Uzbekistan in Moscow is also conducting a dialogue with the Russian authorities on this matter through the relevant diplomatic channels.

"Uzbekistan calls for ensuring compliance with international law and human rights for all nationals," the Ministry said.

"We call on the relevant departments of the Russian Federation to treat the nationals of Uzbekistan with respect and not to humiliate their honor and dignity," the statement said.

The Ministry reported that the Embassy of Uzbekistan sent a note to the Russian Foreign Ministry on the situation in Moscow with a request to comment on it and give a legal assessment of the actions of the officers of the law enforcement agency.

The note emphasizes that the situation that occurred demonstrates a clear violation of human rights, which is unacceptable.

"The Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Uzbekistan is keeping this issue under constant oversight and will continue to take additional measures if necessary," the Ministry concluded.

In May, the Foreign Ministry raised the issue of increasing violations of rights and cases of ill-treatment of labor migrants in the Russian Federation at a meeting with the Russian ambassador.
