Contribution to Future of Our Planet international eco-marathon fest took place at the Barsakelmes (transl. No Return) salt marsh in Karakalpakstan on September 14-15. The fest was organized by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change and the ProRun running school.
According to the Ministry of Ecology, 250 professional and amateur runners from 11 countries, including from Uzbekistan, India, Kenya, Togo, Sudan, Jordan, Spain, Canada, Denmark, Belarus and Russia ran in the marathons.
Among the participants were Farah Majid, the Nike ambassador who popularizes running among Muslim women, and Ghani Suleiman, representing Adidas.
The two-day event included accommodation in a yurt camp, a cultural program, an ethno show, a tour of the Barsakelmes salt marsh, a 42 km marathon, a 21 km half marathon, and 5 and 10 km races.
The organizers hope that the Barsakelmes marathon will become an annual event.
