The Tashkent city appellate court completed the retrial of the case of two former officials previously convicted of having sex with inmates of an orphanage in Urgench, and issued a ruling, the Supreme Court said.

In September 2022, the Khiva province criminal court sentenced the former head of the Department of Justice of Khorezm province and the ex-chief of Yangiaryk provincial department for emergency situations to 1.5 years of house arrest.

The country's public learned that the head of the orphanage offered sexual services of at least three pupils to civil servants.

After public outcry, the case was sent back for retrial.

According to the court ruling, the ex-officials were found guilty under the same articles of the Criminal Code under which they were convicted the first time:

  • Part 1 of Article 128 of the Criminal Code (Engaging in sexual intercourse with a person under 16 years of age (old version);
  • Part 1 of Article 128−1 of the Criminal Code (Engaging in sexual relations with a person aged 16 to 18 years by providing financial or property benefits).

They received the maximum punishment provided for by the old version of the articles - 3 years in prison.
