As part of the railway transport sector reforms program for 2023-2026, Uzbekistan plans to purchase electric trains from South Korean Hyundai Rotem. This is provided for by the Oct. 10 presidential decree.

The Ministry of Transport and the Uzbekistan Railways (UTY) company were instructed to enter into a direct contract with the South Korean Hyundai Rotem in October for the purchase of 6 high-speed electric trains.

To this end, in November it is planned to draw a 185 million-euro loan from the Economic Development and Cooperation Fund of the Republic of Korea (EDCF) for a period of 35 years, including a 10-year grace period at a rate of 0.1% per annum.

in 2018, Uzbekistan planned to purchase Hyundai trains for high-speed rail wervice between Tashkent and Samarkand. The project was estimated at $1 billion. The parties also discussed the supply of electric trains, but in the end, UTY opted for the Spanish Talgo high-speed trains, which manufactures Afrosiyob trains for Uzbekistan.

Recently, a delegation from Uzbekistan was on a visit to South Korea, during which negotiations were held on the purchase of new trains.
