Amanbay Orynbaev was unanimously elected as the new chairman of the Jokargy Kenes of Karakalpakstan at an extraordinary meeting in Nukus on August 26, chaired by the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, his spokesman Sherzod Asadov said.
The President approved the candidacy of Amanbay Orynbayev, taking into account his "leadership abilities, patriotism and human qualities, as well as his proposals for the development of the region."
Addressing the new chairman of the Jokargy Kenes, Shavkat Mirziyoyev said that in his chosen position he must serve the people of Karakalpakstan and justify the trust placed in him, "defining justice, loyalty, honesty, responsibility, initiative and dedication as the most important criteria for his activities."
Murat Kamalov, who had headed Karakalpakstan since October 2020, resigned "due to health reasons."
Amanbay Orynbaev served as the Minister of Internal Affairs of Karakalpakstan for less than five months - from March to the end of July. After unrest in the autonomy in early July, he was relieved of his post and appointed First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers. In early August, he registered his candidacy for participation in the elections for the vacant seats in the Jokargy Kenes, and on August 21 he was elected as a deputy.
Previously, he headed the Probation Service of the Department of Public Security of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan for a little more than three months. He also worked as the first deputy head of the Public Order Protection Authority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan, was the head of the internal affairs department in Nukus.
