The United States today donated 2 million doses of Pfizer vaccine to the people and government of Uzbekistan to continue Uzbekistan's fight against COVID-19. This batch is part of the 1.2 billion doses of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines that the US government has committed to donating to 115 countries through the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) facility.
Speaking at the vaccine arrival ceremony, USAID Uzbekistan Mission Health Director Cherry Gumapas said, “This shipment is in addition to the more than 7.6 million doses of US-made vaccines that the United States has delivered to Uzbekistan since July 2021. The U.S. government also supported previous deliveries of Moderna (7.7 million doses) and AstraZeneca (2.6 million doses) vaccines to Uzbekistan under COVAX.
In addition to vaccines provided, the US, through USAID and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has provided more than $18.2 million to fight COVID-19 in Uzbekistan.
Almost two weeks ago, the first local case of Stealth-Omicron BA.2, one of the most contagious variants of COVID-19, was reported in Uzbekistan. New cases being identified now show that the danger from COVID-19 has not passed. Individuals and families can protect themselves from serious illness and hospitalization by getting vaccinated.
