Council for Cotton Growing under the President is being created In Uzbekistan to introduce a new system for increasing the cotton yield, announced Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the June 28 government meeting. The meeting was dedicated to increasing the volume of cotton production through scientifically based seed production and agricultural technologies, as well as increasing the export of textile products.

The Council, which will headed by the Minister of Innovative Development Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov, will:

  • annually determine the reproduction and planting of productive and early maturing varieties of cotton by region for each cluster;
  • develop a fertilization scheme adapted to climate and temperature changes, regulate the use of herbicides and pesticides;
  • considering that insects will be the biggest problem in the coming years, develop appropriate agrotechnologies for each region to combat them.

The president noted that there were serious problems and shortcomings in seed production, tillage, fertilization and irrigation.

In particular, only 21 clusters across the country have seed shops. Seed preparation (treatment) is also organized in a small number of clusters.

“Cotton varieties created by our scientists (Bukhara, Ravnak, Porlok, Sulton) with a yield of up to 100 centners are not being brought over to clusters, and our farmers do not know what seeds to sow and where to get them. The fact that in recent years day and night temperatures are the same, the spread of new insect species requires the development of varieties that are resistant to these conditions,” the president said.
