Yavan hydroelectric power plant project launching ceremony was held as part of the visit of the President of Tajikistan on the Zarafshan River, the presidential press service said.
Presidents Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Emomali Rahmon, by pressing a symbolic button, launched the plant.
This is the first major project of bilateral energy cooperation, the report says. “A modern plant with a capacity of 140 megawatts will play an important role in ensuring energy security, sustainability of the water and agricultural sectors of our countries,” the press service writes.
Engineering work will be carried out on the basis of modern standards with the involvement of the world's leading companies.
Leading international institutions, including the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, showed interest in participating in financing the project.
“The project will strengthen the scientific and industrial potential of the industry, provide “green” energy to thousands and thousands of households and new enterprises,” the report says.
The estimated cost of the Yavan HPP is $282 million and is expected to generate 700-800 million kWh of electricity. Uzbekistan and Tajikistan also agreed in 2020 to consider the possibility of building a hydroelectric power station on the Fandarya River with an estimated cost of $270 million, a capacity of 135 MW and a generation of 500-600 million kWh of electricity.
