The governments of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan signed a memorandum of intent on the export of electricity, which will be generated by the Rogun hydroelectric power station in the summer. This was reported to Gazeta.uz by the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan.

Currently, according to the Tajik media reports, the process of phased commissioning of all units of the Rogun HPP is underway.

Timelines, modes of electricity supply, volumes and fees will be considered under a 10-year separate electricity purchase agreement, which is planned to be signed before the year-end.

About Rogun HPP

The construction of the Rogun HPP dam was launched in October 2016 in the city of Rogun on the banks of Vakhsh River. The ceremony was attended by President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon. The 335 m high hydroelectric dam will be the tallest rock-and-earth dam in the world.

Located in a cascade of stations on Vakhsh River, Rogun HPP will have six units with a capacity of 600 MW each. With a total capacity of 3,600 MW (over 17 billion kWh), Rogun HPP will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in the region.

The first HPP unit was launched by the President of Tajikistan in November 2018. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking representatives of a number of countries, including Uzbekistan. After the commissioning of the first unit, the hydroelectric power station was connected to the country's general energy system.

The second unit was put into operation in September 2019. The ceremony, dedicated to the 28th anniversary of the country's independence, was also attended by President Emomali Rahmon.

Uzbekistan, before the change of leadership of the country, opposed the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station, expressing fears about the appearance of the world's highest dam in a mountainous area with high seismicity and calling for a review of the project, giving preference to the construction of small and medium-sized hydropower plants.
