On May 31, Director of the Agency for Information and Mass Communications under the President of Uzbekistan Asadjon Khodjaev held a meeting with the President of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty media corporation Jamie Fly and the head of the Uzbek service of the radio station Pakhlavon Turgunov (Pakhlavon Sodiq).

Representatives of the agency informed the head of the foreign media about the liberalization of the information sphere in Uzbekistan, as well as consistent reforms in the areas of freedom of speech and the press, ensuring the openness of government bodies, the report said. Reportedly the country "has created the necessary conditions for the effective work of foreign media outlets."

The parties also discussed the existing problems and ways to solve them, in particular, "the compliance of the stories prepared and published by Radio Ozodlik with the legislation of Uzbekistan and the norms of journalistic ethics." An exchange of views took place on "possible steps to be taken to eliminate these problems."

The accreditation of RFE/RL representatives in Uzbekistan was also discussed. An agreement was reached to review related issues at subsequent meetings.
