The Agency for Space Research and Technology under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan (UzbekCosmos) signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation with the UK company OneWeb, the agency announced this on Monday.
The MoU’s goal is to attract OneWeb, which provides services of a non-geostationary satellite communication system, to the country's market. As part of the MoU, the parties, inter alia, will discuss regulatory issues and "determining the main needs of the state to prioritize the use of available OneWeb satellite capacity."
Uzbekkosmos and OneWeb have agreed to set up a center of expertise “on the use of the OneWeb low-orbit satellite telecommunications system with low signal delay and high throughput.”
Also, the parties will explore the possibilities of using OneWeb communication satellites to provide high-speed broadband Internet to remote and hard-to-reach rural settlements and enterprises.
According to the Director General of Uzbekcosmos Shukhrat Kadirov, the availability of OneWeb telecommunication services in the country will help effectively attain the tasks envisaged by the information technology development programs and ensure the availability of innovative communication services in remote areas.
As reported earlier, the Ministry for the Development of Information Technologies and Communications and the Uzbekcosmos Agency discussed with a representative of SpaceX the possible involvement of the Starlink project and the opening of a representative office in Uzbekistan.
