Ahead of the Navruz holiday, the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a pardon decree, with pardon measures applied in relation to 75 citizens, Uzbekistan 24 reported.

Of those pardoned, 4 convicts will be unconditionally released, 53 will be released on parole, 2 persons will get milder sentence, while the sentences of 16 persons will be cut.

The decree said that 15 pardoned persons are above 60 years of age, 18 are foreign citizens, 17 are the women and 9 are the persons who had joined the banned organizations.

The relevant ministries and departments have been instructed to help those released for social adaptation, get jobs and find a worthy place in society.

The pardon tradition on the occasion of various public holidays dates back to the Soviet times. However, pardon tradition creates corruption within the penitentiary system, with many convicts trying to evade imprisonment by bribing officials in return of being included in pardon lists. This in turn results in well-off people not getting intimidated from committing crimes due to the existence of pardon-life buoy.
