Uzbekistan has begun implementing elements of the Vision Zero strategy, which involves reducing road deaths to zero. This was stated at a meeting of the parliamentary commission on last Friday in the Senate by Deputy Interior Minister/head of Department of Public Security Bekmurod Abdullayev.

He stresses that Uzbek specialists have studied the experience of more than 10 countries in the field of road accident prevention, as well as death and injury in them, including Sweden, Germany, Norway, the USA, South Korea, Canada, Turkey, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.

“Sweden’s experience, which is used in many of these countries, turned out to be the most effective in preventing fatal accidents. The Vision Zero concept sets the main goal of preventing fatal accidents, that is, reducing their number to zero,” the deputy minister said.

“Using this experience and taking into account national legislation and conditions, the Flat Road concept was developed on the example of the Fergana province,” said Bekmurod Abdullayev.

On November 11, 2021, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Fergana province governor’s office signed a memorandum on the implementation of this concept. To control the progress of its implementation, the provincial headquarters and working groups were formed, and the main tasks in five areas were identified. "The results were obtained very swiftly."

Vision Zero is a multi-national road traffic safety project that aims to achieve a highway system with no fatalities or serious injuries involving road traffic. It started in Sweden and was approved by their parliament in October 1997.
