Uzbekistan is closely monitoring the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan with concern, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday.
“We call on both parties to exercise restraint, act in the interests of peace and stability, and prioritize diplomatic dialogue to prevent further deterioration of the situation,” the statement noted.
“Uzbekistan is ready to support any international or regional efforts aimed at de-escalation and the peaceful resolution of the situation,” the statement added.
India launched a series of missile strikes in the night from 6 to 7 May against targets in Pakistan and the Pakistani-administered part of Kashmir. The strikes followed an attack two weeks earlier on tourists near Pahalgam, a town in Indian-administered Kashmir. In response, Pakistan opened artillery fire along the line of control and claimed to have shot down Indian military aircraft. Dozens of people were reportedly killed or injured.
The UN secretary-general and global leaders also expressed concern and called on both sides to show military restraint.
