In the near future, a presidential decree could be issued aimed at limiting the maximum speed in Tashkent city to 60 km/h, declared today President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during his trip to the Samarkand province.
During the inspection of the underground tunnel under construction in Samarkand, the head of state spoke about the Road Safety Concept under development and said:
“In the near future, a decision will be made in Tashkent to establish the maximum [permitted] speed of 60 km/h,” Daryo quoted him.
Earlier in 2017 the draft Road Safety Concept for 2018-2022 proposed to reduce the maximum permitted speed of transport in cities and towns of Uzbekistan from 70 to 60 km/h, but in the end the proposal was not approved.
As effective speed control measures, WHO recommends the restructuring of streets adding components that calm the traffic (elevated pedestrian crossings, safety islands, narrowing and bending of the carriageway, roundabouts at intersections, etc.), setting speed limits in accordance with the functional purpose of each road (for example, near schools and kindergartens - 30 km/h), enforcement of speed limits and raising awareness of the dangers of high speed.
The head of the WHO office, Leanne Kuppens, reported in May 2021 that such an inexpensive way as slowing down can significantly change the situation with road deaths.
