On February 1, 2022, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan (MoH) signed on Grant Agreement for 794 million Japanese yens (approximately $6.9 million USD) on the “Project for Improvement of Medical Service at the Innovative Clinic under the Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan” by Official Development Assistance of Japan. Signing of Grant Agreement has marked as a start of procedures on supplying of medical equipment to the Innovative Clinic under the Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan.  

Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan had completed construction and renovation works of buildings of the Innovative Clinic under the Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan which was opened in September, 2021. Innovative Clinic under the Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan is a main educational base in the region that is able to accommodate 120 beds in total.  

The joint project is in line with the Concept for Development of the Health Care System of the Republic of Uzbekistan for 2019–2025 which sets development of a high-quality health care system in the country, ensuring the preservation and improvement of public health and creation of conditions for raising a healthy generation, is a priority of state policy. The project also contributes to the formation of an effective system of training, retraining and advanced training of medical personnel, development of medical science.

After signing of G/A for the Project, the MoH as the Executing Agency of the Project and a Consultant to  be selected in Japan will sign an agreement for the consulting services (preparation of design and bidding documents, bid evaluation, contracts with Contractor and the Supplier, supervisory works for equipment procurement, delivery, installation, operational guidance and maintenance guidance of equipment.etc.).

It is expected that medical equipment, including educational equipment for simulation center, that is going to be supplied with JICA’s support will enhance the quality of specialised, high technological health care in terms of diagnostics, treatment and prevention of primary diseases (planned surgery, therapy, cardiology, otorhinolaryngology, etc.), introduction of advanced methods and technologies of health care as well as ensuring quality development of human resources for medical institutions of Karakalpakstan.
