Officials of the Samarkand province transport authority spoke about the prospects for switch to new transport infrastructure at a press conference, the local newspaper Samtur reports.
Reportedly, in December last year, European experts visited Samarkand as part of the project “Purchase of electric buses for Samarkand and creation of road infrastructure” implemented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Following the negotiations, Uzbekistan’s major tourist center almost came close to the formation of an ecofriendly system of passenger transportation.
According to provisional data, in the spring of 2022 it is planned to purchase the first large-capacity electric buses produced in Belarus and China. The buses already passed tests according to a range of environmental and operational criteria.
“The program of switching to electric buses will radically change the system of public transport in the city. Its implementation will be implemented in stages. In this process, one of the main tasks is to coordinate the plans of transport workers and organizations carrying out construction in the regional center,” said Jurabek Korzhovov, deputy head of the Samarkand province transport department.
As part of the modernization of the passenger transport system in Samarkand, it is also planned to update almost 900 bus stops.
